Tech junkies looking to pinch pennies in today’s economy can scour the Web for a bounty of free software — for word-processing and photo-editing, online storage and more.

Dozens of downloadable or online-only applications are available at no charge. While many are scaled-down versions of paid programs, you’d be surprised at how feature-rich these freebies can be.

The catch? Some of these applications may be ad-supported and won’t offer extensive tech support, if any.

Companies that offer free software are motivated by a range of factors — from building brand recognition to up-selling users to a paid version, says Michael Gartenberg, research director at JupiterResearch. Some tech companies use free products to experiment with different revenue models, Gartenberg says. Google, for instance, embeds advertising in its Gmail e-mail offering.

“Google, in fact, is a good example of a company that can …

— Company vision for PC 3.0(TM) realized with customers opting for embedded simplicity(TM), heightened security and improved performance –

MILPITAS, Calif., July 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Phoenix Technologies Ltd. , the global leader in core systems firmware, today announced it has signed its first customers for the groundbreaking Phoenix FailSafe and HyperCore products. Two significant deals signal the market’s acceptance of Phoenix’s drive to enable PCs with new levels of security, performance and ease of use.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20070410/SFTU048LOGO)

"We are two steps closer to realizing our vision for the future of personal computing with the most important endorsement a company can achieve on new products - significant customers," said Woody Hobbs, President and CEO of Phoenix Technologies. "We are very excited and look forward to working with our customers and partners to revolutionize the user experience with more security and data protection capabilities embedded into the very foundation of all mobile PCs. We want the PC to be as secure and easy-to-use as a mobile phone, delivering rich functionality and peace-of-mind for all mobile PC users."

Mr. Hobbs added, "Our pole position in the PC stack gives us a unique advantage over other companies in the virtualization space in that it enables us to embed functionality at the very core of personal computers and mobile internet devices. We are thus able to provide the most comprehensive firmware-based solution to all our hardware/device partners and to mobile PC users, raising the bar for any other solution in the industry today. Announcements of any details relating to our customers’ deployments will occur when those customers are ready to make their plans known to the market."

Phoenix FailSafe is the only embedded PC data protection and theft-loss solution in the market today, given that it is tightly integrated with Phoenix’s firmware products, which are at the foundation of more than 60% of mobile PCs in the world today. FailSafe location-based technology allows the owner to locate and recover lost or stolen laptops, remotely encrypt, retrieve or delete the data on the device or disable the unit to prevent potential misuse. Because FailSafe is embedded into the core firmware layer, it is constantly available and functioning. FailSafe is able to offer a superior level of protection due to its tight integration with the hardware security mechanisms in a system.

Phoenix HyperCore is an ultra-efficient embedded hypervisor which allows an independent Linux-based operating system called HyperSpace(TM) to run specialized core services side-by-side with Windows Vista. The HyperSpace platform provides a unique computing environment called ManageSpace that PC designers and security innovators can use to host remote management and security applications that are available before, during and after Windows boot up and shut down. Operating like self-contained appliances, these embedded applications such as anti-virus and secure browsing provide stronger protection than is currently available on PCs.

HyperCore doesn’t compromise the functionality and performance of Windows. In fact, by allowing applications such as anti-virus and remote management to operate outside of Windows, it actually enables Windows Vista to function more efficiently and secures the system even when Vista may be compromised.

Millions of Americans are afflicted by breakouts of unsightly cold sores, caused by the herpes simplex 1 virus, but new research is finally offering them the possibility of a cure.

evading the drugs that might otherwise wipe it out.

Buoyed by that finding, the same team is testing an experimental agent that can “reawaken” the virus, so it might be flushed out into the open and eradicated.

The hope is that, “we could use the drugs that we already have, plus an effective immune system, to cure a person from infection,” explained lead researcher Jennifer Lin Umbach, a postdoctoral associate in Duke’s department of molecular genetics and microbiology.

She and her colleagues published their findings July 2 in the online edition of Nature .

According to the American Social Health Association, up to 80 percent of American adults are infected with herpes simplex 1. Many, but not all, will suffer …

PARIS (AFP) — Cold sores, the painful blemishes of the mouth caused by the herpes simplex virus, may become a thing of the past, US researchers reported on Wednesday in the British weekly journal Nature.

They said they had uncovered a stealth mechanism that enables the virus to hide away in facial nerves before it is revived by a trigger such as excessive sunlight or fever.

The virus, known by its initials as HSV1, can hole up for years, out of reach of any drug, before being roused from dormancy. When it revives, it prompts a sore to return to the same location on the mouth as before.

A team led by Bryan Cullen, a professor of molecular genetics and microbiology at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, explored how HSV1 is able to switch between these latent and active phases.

They found that the answer lies in …

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) — South African AIDS patients in Durban are under siege from drug addicts who rob them of their antiretroviral treatment to get high, the provincial health department said Wednesday.

The life prolonging drug Stocrin, one of the antiretroviral drugs used to fight AIDS, is reportedly crushed and mixed with marijuana and sold in the townships around the coastal city.

The health department has warned that the trend could spark shortages in the city’s hospitals and health centres, in one of the provinces worst afflicted by the AIDS pandemic.

“This practice is disturbing, a large number of HIV patients depend on the state sponsored treatment to stay healthy,” spokesman Leon Mbangwa told AFP.

The department dismissed media reports that health workers at certain hospitals were involved in selling HIV drugs to criminal rings, who then target patients when nurses cannot keep up with …

In 2006, more than 1.2 million Americans — roughly equivalent to the population of Dallas — were hospitalized for pneumonia, a federal government analysis of hospital admissions and costs found.

Pneumonia was second only to childbirth as the most common reason for admission to hospital, and treating these lung infections cost hospitals more than $10 billion in 2006, said the latest News and Numbers from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

The disease occurs when the lungs fill with fluid from infection or inflammation caused by bacteria or a virus. Pneumonia can be especially deadly among the elderly.

The AHRQ analysis of 2006 data revealed the following hospital admissions and costs …

Largest Sterilox Food Safety Customer Extends Lease through 2011

MALVERN, Pa., & STAFFORD, United Kingdom — PuriCore plc (LSE: PURI), the life sciences company focused on the control of infectious pathogens with its novel, safe antimicrobial technology, today announced the signing of an $8.6 million agreement with its largest Sterilox Food Safety customer, one of the top-five US supermarket retailers. This agreement extends the customer’s existing lease into the fourth quarter of 2011.

Under the terms of the agreement, the extension will cover existing lease expirations beginning in August 2008 and ending in October 2009. PuriCore will recognize the revenue from the lease extension beginning in the third quarter of 2008 through the fourth quarter of 2011.

Currently more than 20 US supermarket chains, including two of the five largest, use Sterilox Food Safety Systems. Retailers use the Sterilox Solution in their crisping (rehydrating), misting, cut fruit, and seafood programs as a safe and natural protection against cross contamination of infectious pathogens such as e.Coli and Salmonella and to enhance the freshness of their perishables.

"The extension of this contract with our largest customer is a testament to the outstanding value our Sterilox Food Safety Systems deliver to supermarket retailers," said Greg Bosch, CEO of PuriCore. "This agreement is the second major contract for our Sterilox Food Safety business this year following the $11 million order with another top-5 retailer announced in January. We continue to anticipate significant top-line organic growth in 2008 that will enable us to achieve additional leverage of our operations and further expand into new markets."

About Sterilox Food Safety Systems

Sterilox Food Safety, a division of PuriCore, provides systems that produce a natural food-safe sanitizer using only salt, water, and electricity. More than 20 leading US supermarket chains, including two of the top-five chains, use the Sterilox Food Safety System to rinse fresh food products and sanitize food contact surfaces to prevent cross contamination of infectious pathogens. The Sterilox Solution is highly effective at killing harmful pathogens and spoilage organisms such as E.coli, Salmonella, Norovirus, Psuedomonas, yeast, and molds. When used on fresh food, the Sterilox Solution reduces the risk of infectious pathogens and enhances the product shelf life. With the Sterilox System, retailers are protecting their brand, improving their image, reducing inventory loss, and achieving greater customer loyalty.
