Security-as-a-Service Solution Enables Remote Security Management for VARs Serving the SMB Market

GLENDALE, Calif., June 30 /PRNewswire/ — Panda Security, a leading provider of IT security solutions, today announced it has been selected by Everything Channel as a 2008 CRN Emerging Tech vendor for Panda Managed Office Protection(TM), a security-as-a-service (SaaS) solution for small and medium businesses (SMBs) and value added resellers (VARs) serving the SMB market. CRN’s Emerging Tech list recognizes companies that are delivering high margins for solution providers with innovative and easy-to-use technology that undercuts industry giants.

Panda Security’s proprietary cloud computing model, Collective Intelligence(TM), is at the center of Panda’s Managed Office Protection, offering the industry’s most advanced method for detecting and remediating viruses. With the hosting and management occurring completely in the cloud, Panda offers companies the benefit of a lower cost of ownership while delivering far higher levels of protection than that of traditional antivirus solutions.

Fully managed services are an important component of Panda Managed Office Protection, a Web management console that enables secure configuration of IT resources from any computer on the Internet. The new Web-based subscription service releases businesses from additional hardware, maintenance personnel and other resources dedicated to antivirus while delivering the highest levels of security for all nodes on the network, including PCs, laptops, servers and remote branch offices. As a fully managed set of services, Panda Managed Office Protection allows organizations to administer their protection anytime from anywhere, including those from remote offices which are not connected to the LAN, without additional infrastructure investments. It also enables Managed Service Providers (MSP) to better support their customers without having the burden of building a specific infrastructure.

According to the CRN Emerging Tech Survey, the top reasons solution providers add emerging technologies include, the technology is superior to other products in the market segment; the technology compliments a solution providers’ existing practice areas; emerging vendors provide better services opportunities; emerging vendors pay better attention to partners; emerging vendors offer higher margins, customers want alternative product choices; and emerging vendors have better joint marketing programs. In addition, 61 percent of solutions providers surveyed plan to increase the number of emerging technology vendors they partner with in the next 12 months.

"New and innovative vendor partners can help spur profitable new ideas that Solution Providers can use to build revenue and customer loyalty, and the CRN Emerging Tech list is where Solution Providers go to find these vendors," said Robert C. Demarzo, senior vice president and editorial director, Everything Channel editorial.

Vendors who make the CRN Emerging Tech list must have an established solution provider program and formal guidelines for recruiting channel partners. They must demonstrate that its direct sales mix is trending down as evidenced by the company’s revenue history, a channel positive or channel neutral strategy for internal sales compensation, and not be a dominant market share player. Final selection to the Emerging Technology list was made at the discretion of the CRN editorial team after a review of the submitted information and conversations with current or targeted partners.

"In an increasingly threatening malware environment, the success we have experienced with our 1100+ channel partners has spawned an industry-wide awareness and demand for mitigating the perils that networks are faced with on a daily basis," said Didier Guibal, president, Panda Security U.S.A. "We are thrilled to be included on CRN’s Emerging Tech Vendor list because it not only recognizes the high quality and effectiveness of our products, but further validates our commitment to providing our reseller base with solutions that provide as much value to them as to their customers."

Assures System Integrity of Windows Embedded Point of Sale Devices, ATMs and Kiosks

CUPERTINO, Calif. — Solidcore[R] Systems, Inc., the leading provider of software to detect and prevent unwanted change, today introduced its S3 Control[TM] PCI Device edition, which enables retailers to achieve Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) compliance with reduced time and expense. The new solution eases the burden on merchants using Windows Embedded grocery, retail and hospitality systems to meet the PCI DSS requirements and to document compliance. The PCI Device edition also protects sensitive bank card data by prohibiting viruses and malware from penetrating point-of-sale (POS) terminals, servers, ATMs, and kiosks.

Device manufacturers and merchants have been in a difficult position of retrofitting fixed-function retail devices with more costly security applications that degrade device performance, such as anti-virus (AV) software. Solidcore addresses these challenges with its S3 Control PCI Device edition, which is a small footprint, low-overhead change prevention solution that runs transparently on Windows Embedded devices. The new solution provides the assurance for system integrity that the PCI standard demands by protecting against unauthorized software changes, malware and vulnerabilities. It reduces the labor-intensive task of verifying system integrity by providing reports measuring best practices for security configurations in accordance with the Center for Internet Security (CIS) benchmarks. These reports can be used for PCI self-assessments to ease the burden of validating PCI compliance on devices. These features and the CIS benchmark reporting helps position Solidcore as the best-suited solution for securing devices and providing the compensating control for PCI DSS anti-virus and file integrity monitoring.

"It has become essential for retailers to control access and ensure software integrity across the entire in-store electronic payments and POS environment," said Ray Carlin, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Retalix, and president and CEO of StoreNext Retail Technologies. "Solidcore has combined extremely effective lock-down protection with rapid deployment, and this enables our supermarket customers to protect data and sustain PCI compliance with reduced effort and cost."

Networked systems such as POS devices, ATMs and kiosks leverage Microsoft’s powerful platforms such as Windows XP Embedded and Windows Embedded for Point of Service. The devices deployed to retail locations are often managed via the Microsoft System Center, and with Solidcore’s S3 Control PCI Device edition, customers have the option of utilizing Microsoft System Center as an authorized change agent for applying new patches, policies or software packages to the device. This policy enforcement capability can deny all other update attempts outside of Microsoft System Center, including those attempts performed with local and physical access to the device. The flexibility enables changes coming from the device manufacturer, retail application vendor or retailer to be regulated while providing the highest degree of system integrity and reporting required to document PCI compliance.

"Windows Embedded operating systems combined with Solidcore’s software and the Microsoft Systems Center allows device makers working through the rigors of PCI compliance to create smart, connected technologies," said Irena Andonova, marketing group product manager for the Windows Embedded Business. "This combination brings unparalleled value to retailers and gives our joint customers a more secure, interactive and differentiated solution for the most demanding retail environments."

"Most retailers have unwanted software, applications and code running on the same payment processing devices that are accepting credit cards on a daily basis," said Jim Sarale, vice president of embedded solutions for Solidcore. "Only by locking down devices with real-time change and runtime control can merchants be assured those systems are secure. Solidcore has proven itself as the standard for securing devices such as ATMs and point of sale systems, and with this new offering we are making it even easier and more cost-effective to assure PCI compliance on the device."

Solidcore’s S3 Control PCI Device edition leverages patented technology with unmatched levels of device runtime and change control to deliver a high assurance of device integrity. The Solidcore solution provides benefits to retailers in the form of higher security and availability of in-store systems, while also leveraging the software to sustain and document compliance with the PCI DSS requirements. Device manufactures benefit from offering a more secure, out-of-the-box payment processing solution with enhanced software control, security and compliance. The manufacturers also benefit from the ability to reduce support costs associated with unauthorized changes to the operating system and applications on the device.

Light-Weight Real-Time Protection for Mac Specific Threats

SAN FRANCISCO — Leading security software vendor, PC Tools, today announced the launch of iAntiVirus BETA Edition, a light weight anti-virus and anti-spyware tool, designed specifically for the Mac operating system. Providing real-time protection and comprehensive system scanning, iAntiVirus is designed to detect and remove Mac specific threats, to ensure your Mac remains safe. This launch coincides with Apple’s recommendation to install and use anti-virus software to scan files, in its recently released Security Configuration Guide.

"Despite the misconception that the Mac OS is inherently secure, internal research has signaled a change in the number of threats targeting this platform. PC Tools recognize that while the Mac platform is relatively safe, it is not impervious to malware," said Simon Clausen, Chief Executive Officer, PC Tools.

PC Tools’ Malware Research Team have identified a range of malware specifically targeting Mac OS X. While virus detections are minimal there is a tendency towards socially engineered threats with the core purpose of tricking the user into an action that will cause a malware infection. Research conducted in the first quarter of 2008 found that 95% of all Mac malware threats identified were OSX related, of which 38% were keyloggers, 30% were hacking tools, 11% were backdoors, whilst just 2% were viruses1.

PC Tools are confident that, as the threat landscape continues to evolve and the market for Mac products escalates, the Mac operating system will become an increasingly attractive platform of attack.

"The Mac has a solid reputation for remaining relatively threat free. However, we are witnessing the use of low level malware scripts, to identify whether there is the potential to infect the Mac OS, as well as the opportunity for malware producers to obtain a significant return on investment," said Clausen.

"It is also important to note that whilst Mac OS attacks may not have proliferated widely; the payload they deliver is just as significant as it is in the Windows environment. It is for this reason that we see an increasing need for consumers to protect their Macs against the growing danger of malware infection. We are encouraging Mac users to become more vigilant about security, particularly given the widespread propagation of socially engineered threats affecting most operating systems," said Clausen.

Based on an increasing need for Mac consumers to seek out protection for the Mac environment, PC Tools have developed iAntiVirus which provides real-time and comprehensive system scanning to detect and remove Mac specific threats.

iAntiVirus detects and removes viruses, spyware, keyloggers, Trojans and in particular socially engineered threats which, for example, can propagate without user awareness through instant messenger and P2P file sharing applications.

"Uniquely, the iAntiVirus database is a dedicated Mac only solution that does not contain unnecessary information about Windows based threats, that do not execute on a Mac. This has allowed us to develop a product that keeps the memory footprint and system resource usage to an absolute minimum," said Clausen.

"In addition to a full range of features, iAntiVirus is also designed with an interface that is familiar, simple and functional, making it easy for users to scan, remove and manage infections and threats," said Clausen.

Key Features

* Customized Mac protection: iAntiVirus detection technology has been designed exclusively for the Mac operating system - to detect and remove Mac specific and socially engineered threats. The iAntiVirus database does not contain unnecessary information about Windows-based threats and is a dedicated Mac only solution.

* Minimal system impact: iAntiVirus is designed to work silently in the background when in monitoring mode - threats are automatically blocked and removed with minimal system impact. A small alert window is displayed to advise you that your Mac has been protected against an attack.

* Simple, Functional and Familiar: Just like Mac OS, iAntiVirus has been designed with the user in mind. The interface is functional, familiar and user-friendly, making it simple to scan, remove and manage detected infections.

* Real-time protection: Protects your Mac against infections in real time by automatically placing detected infections in quarantine, allowing you to also view and restore items, if required. When an infection is detected and blocked, an alert is displayed below the system menu bar (example alerts are provided below).

* Custom Scan options: You may perform a variety of scan types using iAntiVirus, allowing you to strike a balance between how comprehensive the scan is and the time taken to execute the scan.

Provides Vision for the Next Generation of Unified Threat Management (UTM) - Extensible Threat Management (XTM) Solutions

SEATTLE, June 30 /PRNewswire/ — WatchGuard(R) Technologies, a global provider of network security solutions, today announced its vision of taking unified threat management (UTM) to the next level of performance, scalability, high security, investment protection and end-user choice with its vision and technology direction of extensible threat management (XTM) and connectivity solutions.

"With the increase of mobility, consumer and Web 2.0 applications moving into the enterprise, security of the network perimeter is at an inflection point, and how security is viewed, architected and managed is quickly changing," said Joe Wang, CEO, WatchGuard Technologies. "As a pioneer and award winning innovator of UTM technologies and solutions, WatchGuard is taking UTM to its next level with our XTM vision and technology direction."

In 2004 industry analyst firm IDC coined the term UTM, a moniker to describe integrated network appliances that perform firewall, gateway anti-virus, and intrusion detection/prevention services. By 2008, WatchGuard added a host of new, extensible services, such as virtual private networking (SSL VPN), advanced web (HTTP and HTTPS), application and content filtering, e-mail/spam blocking — even security for VoIP (SIP and H.323). Now, WatchGuard readies to redefine unified threat management with its vision of extending the UTM category to include XTM solutions.

Threats are becoming more sophisticated and less conspicuous. This leaves networks vulnerable to extremely targeted attacks that include blended threats, such as phishing e-mails that include malware payloads. The challenge is to give businesses threat management solutions that not only adapt, but can proactively address future and unknown threats so that high security is always maintained.

Adding to this, most network administrators work in mixed network environments of disparate infrastructure components and solutions. For these administrators, it is imperative to have a flexible and scalable gateway security appliance that can be modified, updated and customized to meet their particular security profiles and postures.

What is Extensible Threat Management?

Extensibility means having the ability to add on to or extend. WatchGuard’s XTM vision is built upon the premise that network security solutions fundamentally need to have this quality. XTM appliances must be able to proactively adapt to dynamic network environments as well as protect against the litany of unknown, future threats. With extensible protection, as businesses grow, so too does their security platform.

WatchGuard XTM stands for the extensibility needed for management and control. Network administrators do not have cookie-cutter environments. Each is unique and thus has individualized needs and concerns. WatchGuard recognizes this and builds extensibility into its management and user control features so that administrators can maximize their XTM investment to best suit their network and user needs.

WatchGuard XTM represents extensible choice. Not only do XTM appliances need to fully interoperate and support mixed network infrastructures, but they need the inherent security technology to be flexible, too. This way, administrators can pick and choose the security service that they want from the XTM device. For example, some may want anti-virus (AV) protection provided at a different source other than the gateway. Here, an administrator could turn "off" the AV protection at the XTM appliance, while maintaining full firewall, IPS/IPS as well as web content filtering at the network gateway. With WatchGuard XTM, the choice of security services is ultimately up to the customer.

WatchGuard XTM provides extensible ownership. WatchGuard leads the industry with software upgradeab
