EAST GRINSTEAD, England, June 18 /PRNewswire/ — Diskeeper Corporation revealed findings of a recent IT study showing Defragmentation and Antivirus as the two most important practices for IT administrators.

A panel of 179 Network Administrators was surveyed recently on the software they considered vital to have on their Servers: 48% responded with "Antivirus/Symantec" and 45%, "Defrag/Diskeeper".

These results show how fragmentation and performance related issues have become the core of IT Managers’ concerns; All Windows systems suffer from fragmentation but servers are particularly affected by it. Because of multiple user traffic, it is common to see some files broken into thousands - even millions of fragments. This causes a host of intolerable problems such as slow-downs, longer back-ups and anti-virus scans, performance bottlenecks, odd conflicts between applications and crashes.

Diskeeper 2008(R) Server Edition represents the best tool to optimize networks and bring them back to their maximum performance or to prevent their fragmentation in the first place. It does it automatically with no intervention needed on the part of the IT Administrator.

Defrag is performed transparently in the background with InvisiTasking(TM ), Diskeeper’s innovative technology that runs in real time, using only idle resources.

InvisiTasking is efficiently combined with I-FAAST(TM) (Intelligent File Access Acceleration Sequencing Technology) that closely monitors file usage and organises the most commonly utilised files for the fastest possible access, boosting file reads and writes up to 80%.

Not only is defrag recognized as a priority in the system maintenance process, it also enables anti-virus scans to run much quicker.

Fortinet® — the pioneer and leading
provider of unified threat management (UTM) solutions — today announced
that new IDC research data confirms that the company again ranked No. 1 in
worldwide UTM factory revenue for Q1 2008, fueled primarily by large
enterprise and MSSP adoption of its FortiGate® network security
appliances. For nine consecutive quarters, Fortinet continues to lead the
UTM market ahead of Check Point, Cisco, Crossbeam, Juniper and SonicWALL.

Data in the latest IDC Worldwide Quarterly Security Appliance Tracker, June
2008 confirmed:

-- Fortinet is the overall leader in UTM factory revenue for Q1 2008,
ahead of Check Point, Cisco, Crossbeam, Juniper and SonicWALL

-- Fortinet is the No. 1 vendor in the high-end UTM ($50K-$99.9K) price
band for both factory revenue and units shipped

-- Fortinet is the No. 1 vendor in the enterprise UTM ($25K-$49.9K) price
band segments for both factory revenue and units shipped

-- Fortinet is the overall leader in UTM factory revenue for Western
Europe and Asia Pacific for Q1 2008

“As evidenced by IDC’s latest numbers, Fortinet has remained at the
forefront of the network security market — holding our UTM factory revenue
lead for more than two years and continuing to strengthen our position as
one of the largest network security appliance vendors worldwide,” said Ken
Xie, president, founder and CEO of Fortinet. “Fortinet’s leadership has
consistently been fueled by large enterprises that require a new generation
security gateway for real-time protection of their networks and content, as
well as MSSPs and carriers who want to offer truly integrated security
services to their customers.”

According to IDC, UTM security appliance products include multiple security
features integrated into one device. To be included in this category, as
opposed to other Threat Management appliance segments, UTM appliances must
contain the ability to perform network firewalling, network intrusion
detection and prevention, and gateway antivirus. All of the capabilities
need not be utilized, but the functions must exist inherently in the
appliance. In addition to the mandatory applications, UTM appliances may
also host other security or networking features.

Delivered via its flagship family of FortiGate appliances, Fortinet
provides a flexible platform that enables enterprises and service providers
of all sizes to consolidate critical security technology and services to
enhance network protection and reduce total cost of ownership. These
ASIC-accelerated security appliances integrate essential security
applications and services, including antivirus, firewall, VPN, intrusion
prevention, Web filtering, anti-spam and traffic shaping. All FortiGate
systems are
kept up-to-date by Fortinet’s FortiGuard® Network, which provides
regular updates that help ensure protection against the most damaging,
content-based threats from email and Web traffic such as viruses, worms,
intrusions, and other unwanted network traffic — around the clock and
around the world. FortiGate appliances are complemented by an array of
messaging, management and analysis systems and end-point security
solutions.

AVG Free Retains Its Position as the Most Popular Anti-virus Download

ORLANDO, Fla., June 18 /PRNewswire/ — AVG Technologies, developer of the AVG range of Internet security software, announced that its AVG Free security product was downloaded more than five million times from CNET Download.com during the last week of May 2008. The consistently high number of downloads reinforces the product’s continuing and growing appeal to users. AVG Free is the most popular application on Download.com.

"It’s good that users are learning they need more than just anti-virus to be safe on the Internet today," says Karel Obluk, chief technology officer at AVG Technologies. "AVG Free also protects against many drive-by downloads and other Web 2.0 threats by giving real-time safety ratings to all search results obtained through Google, MSN, and Yahoo.

"While we provide AVG Free because we believe everyone has a right to basic Internet security, users should remember that the free product does not protect against the full range of today’s web-borne threats. For complete protection, users should consider AVG’s commercial products."

AVG Free provides core protection against viruses and spyware, together with the safe-searching component of the company’s patent-pending LinkScanner(R) technology, incorporated into the new AVG Security Toolbar. The Free product does not include the proactive safe-surfing of the full LinkScanner module that is included in the commercial AVG products, nor the extended protection against hackers, keyloggers, spam, phishing attacks, and malicious file downloads. Support is provided through a free peer forum hosted by AVG Technologies.

Commercial AVG products are available through an extensive network of distributors, resellers, and business partners as well as through many online stores and the company’s website at http://www.avg.com/. With the commercial product range, users receive free program updates and 24/7 technical support for the full duration of the license.

Current and future solutions and services powered by Trend Micro’s next-generation cloud-client content security infrastructure showcased during Trend Micro’s corporate vision event in New York City.

NEW YORK, June 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Trend Micro Incorporated , a global leader in Internet content security, showcased today current and future solutions and services fueled by the company’s expanded cloud-client approach to endpoint security during its annual corporate vision event in New York City.

Designed to reduce reliance on time-consuming pattern-downloads on the client, this new approach is expected to become a key component of Trend Micro Smart Protection Network, a next-generation cloud-client content security infrastructure designed to protect customers from Web threats. It delivers the infrastructure behind Trend Micro’s solutions and services and demonstrates Trend Micro’s commitment to executing on the company’s strategy and vision to move more security capabilities into the Internet cloud.

The next stage of Web threat protection — stopping them "in-the-cloud"

This announcement marks the next stage in the company’s multi-layered strategy to combat cybercriminals who have transformed what was once a relatively simple landscape of viruses into a complexly hidden, yet flourishing underground economy that preys upon the growing number of businesses and individuals who use the Internet on a daily basis. Trend Micro continues to push security further into the network infrastructure, stopping threats at their source in the cloud, while also embedding multi-layered protections more deeply into the network.

Trend Micro Smart Protection Network, which uses a number of patent-pending technologies, combines Internet-based (or "in-the-cloud") technologies with lighter-weight, client-based methods to ensure customers have immediate access to the latest and strongest protection wherever and however they connect — from home, within the company’s network, or on the go.

At the heart of the Trend Micro Smart Protection Network is the move beyond the conventional approaches of blocking threats and towards a global network of threat intelligence that uses Trend Micro’s cloud-based technology to block Web threats before they reach a network or computer. Leveraged across the company’s on-premise products, as well as hosted solutions that have effectively protected millions of customers since Trend Micro’s inception 20 years ago, Trend Micro Smart Protection Network takes the fight against crimeware into the Internet cloud.

"Memory-consuming pattern files on PCs and networks have grown exponentially in recent years. In 2005, approximately 50 new patterns were added to a pattern database in a given day; in 2008, that number has grown to 5,000 a day," said Raimund Genes, CTO of anti-malware for Trend Micro. "By storing the majority of pattern files in an Internet cloud database and keeping them at a minimum on the endpoint, Trend Micro helps stop Web, file and email threats before they reach the end-user or the corporate network. This new approach lightens bandwidth consumption on customers’ networks and endpoints and provides faster and more comprehensive up-to-date protection."

First introduced as Trend Micro’s Web threat protection strategy in March 2007 and renamed as part of this announcement, the Trend Micro Smart Protection Network correlates Web, email and file threat data using reputation technologies and continuously updated threat databases in the cloud to detect, analyze and protect customers from the latest threats. These technologies have been successfully integrated within the company’s security solutions portfolio throughout the past 15 months and currently handle an average of 5 billion queries per day. With its Web threat protection strategy, Trend Micro first staked the claim that traditional scan-based security solutions alone can no longer provide effective protection from insidious Web threats and that a multi-layered, multi-component set of flexible, adaptable techniques was needed.

Trend Micro Smart Protection Network: Key ingredients

  Web reputation technology

With one of the largest domain-reputation databases in the world, Trend Micro’s Web reputation technology tracks the credibility of Web domains by assigning a reputation score based on factors such as a Web site’s age, historical location changes and indications of suspicious activities discovered through malware behavior analysis. It will then continue to scan sites and block users from accessing infected ones. To increase accuracy and reduce false positives, Trend Micro Web reputation technology assigns reputation scores to specific pages or links within sites instead of classifying or blocking entire sites since often, only portions of legitimate sites are hacked and reputations can change dynamically over time.

Email reputation technology

Trend Micro’s email reputation technology validates IP addresses by checking them against a reputation database of known spam sources and by using a dynamic service that can assess email sender reputation in real time. Reputation ratings are refined through continuous analysis of the IP addresses’ "behavior," scope of activity and prior history. Malicious emails are blocked in the cloud based on the sender’s IP address, preventing threats such as zombies or botnets from reaching the network or the user’s PC.

Benefits from Enterprise-Class Messaging Protection in Cost-Effective, Easy-to-Manage Hosted Service

SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 18 /PRNewswire/ — Proofpoint, Inc., the leading provider of unified email security and data loss prevention solutions, today announced that Opechee Construction Corporation has deployed Proofpoint on Demand(TM) - Standard Edition to defend against all types of inbound spam, viruses, worms and other malware.

A design and construction firm that builds retail, office, institutional, hospitality, industrial and commercial facilities throughout New England, Opechee was getting inundated with spam — with some employees receiving more than 300 spam messages a day. With the growing number and sophistication of email attacks, it was a challenge for the company’s limited IT resources to preemptively address these threats while still delivering a high level of service and support. The constant administration and manual intervention required by the company’s previous mail server-based anti-spam solution was no longer a viable option.

"As the main IT person, I handle everything from programming to desktop support, so it was time to find a more effective and easy-to-manage messaging solution that better fit the needs of our business and freed me to focus on other IT demands, rather than spend time wading through spam and maintaining custom anti-spam rules," said Matt Twombly, IT manager for Opechee Construction Corporation. "Proofpoint on Demand offers the ideal solution because it delivers the effectiveness of an enterprise-class email security solution in an easy to manage, hosted environment."

Opechee selected Proofpoint on Demand - Standard Edition, an easy-to-use, lower-cost version of Proofpoint’s hosted service. Designed for small- and medium-sized businesses that demand powerful spam blocking, virus protection and content filtering capabilities, Proofpoint on Demand - Standard Edition provides uninterrupted email security without requiring additional investments in IT personnel or infrastructure.

"Proofpoint on Demand has completely solved our spam problems. The difference is like night and day from our previous solution," added Twombly. "And we have the peace of mind knowing that Proofpoint’s service is guaranteed by the most stringent service level agreements."

With Proofpoint, Opechee has been able to achieve a true "lights out" operation — with zero administration required and 24×7 monitoring and operational support, updates and upgrades provided by Proofpoint. The Standard Edition also offers the same performance guarantees as Proofpoint’s enterprise solutions, including 99%+ spam effectiveness, 100% virus protection, "five nines" availability and "no delay" email delivery.

"We saw enterprise spam volumes rise by more than 50 percent during the first quarter of 2008, and we expect this number to more than double this year," said Sandra Vaughan, senior vice president of products and marketing for Proofpoint. "Opechee’s situation reflects that of many of our customers, who are challenged to stay ahead of spam and other threats while providing excellent support in a limited-resource environment. Proofpoint’s extensible platform — including four flexible deployment options — is designed to provide customers with a solution that not only protects them, but suits their IT requirements and enables their business."

A protein linked to Alzheimer’s disease also plays a role in HIV progression by promoting entry of the virus into cells, U.S. researchers say.

“The apoE4 protein is the greatest known genetic risk factor to Alzheimer’s disease. However, its role in infectious diseases has been less well-defined,” study author Robert W. Mahley, president of the Gladstone Institutes, said in a prepared statement.

There are three different forms of ApoE. The genetic variant that leads to the production of the apoE4 protein is present in about 15 percent of people.

In this study, the researchers analyzed 1,267 HIV-positive people and 1,132 people without HIV. They found that HIV patients with two copes of the apoE4 allele had a much faster disease course and progression to death than those with two copies of the apoE3 …
