TELECOMWORLDWIRE-4 June 2008-Top three e-threats in May announced by BitDefender(C)1994-2008 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

A list of the top three e-threats in the US in May has been released by BitDefender, a provider of antivirus software and data security solutions.

The company revealed that the number one thread during May was Trojan.Clicker.CM, a pop-up-ad-serving trojan distributed via infected websites.

Trojan.Downloader.WMA.Wimad.N., a trojan that loads another piece of malware by pretending to be a helper application that downloads a "codec" playing a "special type" of WMA file, came in second place, BitDefender said.

Third place went to fake (or rogue) antivirus installers, which pretend to install an "XP antivirus". The antivirus then claims to have found viruses on the user’s PC and asks for money for their removal.

BitDefender ®, an award-winning
provider of antivirus software and data security solutions, released today
a list of the top three e-threats menacing computers in the US in May.

The top menace of the month is Trojan.Clicker.CM, a
pop-up-ad-serving trojan distributed via infected websites. In order to
successfully display the pop-ups containing advertisements, the trojan has
the ability to bypass the Norton Internet Security Pop-up Blocker.

In second place is Trojan.Downloader.WMA.Wimad.N. Despite the
complicated-sounding name, this trojan serves a very simple function: to
load another piece of malware. It does so by pretending to be a helper
application that downloads a “codec” playing a “special type” of WMA file.
Once the user is tricked, it downloads and runs Adware.PlayMp3z.A, an
application meant to take personal information from the computer and use it
for marketing or suspicious practices. When executed, the adware displays a
pop-up with an EULA, in an attempt to convince users of its legitimacy.

In third place — proving once again that security is big business — is a
fake (or rogue) antivirus installer, which purports to install “XP
antivirus.” Once installed, XP antivirus claims to have found viruses on
the victim’s computer and requests money “for activation” to remove them.

“Adware is the word of the month and that is because it makes money without
posing so much legal risk,” explained Sorin Dudea, Head of BitDefender AV
Research. “We may see more of these and similar threats in the months to
come.”

BitDefender's Top Three E-Threats for May include:

   1. Trojan.Clicker.CM 7.54%
   2. Trojan.Downloader.WMA.Wimad.N 7.08%
   3. Trojan.FakeAlert.PP 6.12%

Detects 100 Percent of Viruses, Worms and Bots With Zero False Positives

SAN DIEGO — ESET, the leader in proactive threat protection, today announced it has captured a record 50th VB100 award from Virus Bulletin, a widely-respected independent comparative testing group. ESET is the first company to reach the 50-award milestone.

Virus Bulletin introduced its first VB100 award in 1998, and conducts several comparatives every year, rotating its platforms between Linux, Windows, Windows servers and Novell Netware. In order to display the VB100 logo, an antivirus product must meet two criteria: (1) Demonstrate it detects all "In-the-Wild" viruses during both on-demand and on-access scanning; and, (2) Generate no false positives when scanning a set of clean files. Since the inception of VB100 awards in 1998, ESET’s antivirus products boast a success rate of over 96 percent - the industry’s highest. Most antivirus vendors have success ratios in the 50 - 75 percent range.

"With excellent detection and no false positive issues, ESET has stormed its way to a record 50th VB100 award," said John Hawes of Virus Bulletin. "The ESET installation process proved fast and efficient, and the command line scanner was a joy to operate."

"No other company can claim 50 VB100 awards and we are very pleased to be the first," said Anton Zajac, CEO of ESET, LLC. "I want to personally thank our employees, and notably the research and development teams that continue to produce security software’s most proactive, precise, lightweight and fast product."

ESET File Security for Linux - the subject of this month’s testing - is powered by ThreatSense([R]) technology, an advanced heuristics engine that enables proactive detection of malware not covered by even the most frequently updated signature-based products. Unlike traditional approaches, ESET solutions decode and analyze executable code in real-time, using an emulated environment. By allowing malware to execute in a secure virtual world, ESET is able to clearly differentiate between benign files and even the most sophisticated and cleverly-disguised malware.

About ESET

ESET develops software solutions that deliver instant, comprehensive protection against evolving computer security threats. ESET pioneered and continues to lead the industry in proactive threat detection. ESET NOD32 Antivirus, its flagship product, consistently achieves the highest accolades in all types of comparative testing and is the foundational product that builds out the ESET product line to include ESET Smart Security. ESET Smart Security is an integrated antivirus, antispyware, antispam and personal firewall solution that combines accuracy, speed and an extremely small system footprint to create the most effective security solution in the industry. Both products have an extremely efficient code base that eliminates the unnecessary large size found in some solutions. This means faster scanning that doesn’t slow down computers or networks. Sold in more than 160 countries, ESET has worldwide production headquarters in Bratislava, SK and worldwide distribution headquarters in San Diego, U.S. ESET also has offices in Bristol, U.K.; Buenos Aires, AR; Prague, CZ; and is globally represented by an extensive partner network. SYDNEY (AFP) — Australian researchers said Wednesday they have developed a means of producing a “natural condom” which could prevent the spread of AIDS.

The Melbourne researchers said they believe men could reduce their risk of contracting the HIV virus, which causes the deadly disease AIDS, by applying the female hormone, oestrogen, to their penis once a week.

University of Melbourne researcher Professor Roger Short said that use of an oestrogen cream could quadruple the thin layer of the protein keratin on the skin and thereby provide a natural defensive layer.

“You create what you could call a natural condom,” Short told the …

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Tyson Foods Inc. has begun killing and burying the carcasses of 15,000 hens from a flock that tested positive for exposure to a strain of the bird flu in northwest Arkansas, state officials said Tuesday.

Tyson said preliminary tests on the flock indicated the presence of antibodies for H7N3, a less virulent strain of the virus.

Routine blood tests conducted Friday found the possible exposure, said Jon Fitch, director of the state’s Livestock and Poultry Commission. Further tests done by the state and the U.S. Department of Agriculture found the birds did not have active infections.

Dynamic Filtering Software Now Extends Use When Outside the Network

CHICAGO — NetOp Tech, Inc. today announced the latest version of its leading Internet software, Netfilter 5.0, with added features such as "Follow Me" technology with Internet protection for computers both in and out of network range. The software will also continue to use dynamic Internet filtering, which quickly analyzes Web sites for offensive or dangerous text, images and behaviors, blocking those found to be offensive.

"Netfilter 5.0 will secure businesses, schools and other network environments from potential malware, viruses and offensive content on the Internet," said Tonya Hottmann, head of marketing for the Americas. "It is a robust protection solution, necessary for the maintenance of healthy network environments."

NetOp’s "Follow Me" technology protects the integrity of computers on a company or educational institution network by continuing Internet protection and filtering services even when outside of the network. Employees and students are protected against harmful content continuously, whether they are accessing the Internet through the network, at home or on the go.

Unlike other Internet filters that only rely on a list of blocked Web sites, Netfilter 5.0 has the ability to analyze text, images and individual behavior to detect whether or not the material is appropriate to view. This counters efforts made by some Web sites that may use misleading and seemingly safe Web addresses to host inappropriate or offensive content. Using Netfilter 5.0, IT administrators can also upload a blacklist of Web sites that have been previously reviewed as inappropriate.

Additional new features to Netfilter 5.0 include the ability to read text in different languages, even written material that reads from right to left. Network administrators will enjoy added functionality such as extended logging and automatic critical update retrieval and deployment. Administrators also have the ability to block Internet messaging, streaming video, images and peer-to-peer programs.

Real-time statistics are available, to view a user’s Internet activity when on the network. Companies without such monitoring capabilities often report productivity losses, as employees may abuse the Internet for personal use during work hours.

"Netfilter will help boost productivity in businesses, and keep children safe while surfing the Internet," said Hottmann. "It limits potential litigation from illegal downloads or harassment lawsuits, and helps schools ensure that they are protecting children from potential offensive material, as more than 250,000 web sites are added to the Internet each hour."

NetOp Netfilter 5.0 is available for all major operating systems including Microsoft Vista, XP, Apple OS X and Linux. More information can be found at http://www.netop.com/netop-490.htm. Free 30-day trial versions of NetOp products are available at http://www.netop.com/freetrial.

EKC, Other Results, as well as Broad-Spectrum Nanoviricides Capability to be Discussed

WEST HAVEN, Conn. — NanoViricides, Inc. (OTC BB: NNVC.OB) (the "Company"), said that it has been invited to make a presentation outlining the broad-spectrum capability of its nanoviricides at the NSTI Nanotech 2008 Conference in Boston, MA, on Thursday, June 5 (http://www.nsti.org/Nanotech2008/thursday.html). NSTI Nanotech is a highly renowned annual international scientific conference with a major track on nanomedicines (http://www.nsti.org/Nanotech2008/).

"We will present some of the EKC data at this conference," said Eugene Seymour, MD, MPH, CEO of the Company, adding, "The fact that we have broad-spectrum nanoviricides that are highly effective, and not a one-virus-one-drug approach, is very significant in battling diseases such as viral conjunctivitis which can be caused by many different types of viruses."

The Company has previously reported that a rapid and significant clinical response using a nanoviricide drug candidate eye-drop treatment was seen in the eyes of test animals. The most effective drug candidate was a broad-spectrum nanoviricide that has previously exhibited very high effectiveness against a broad range of viruses in animal studies including influenza and rabies. It also demonstrated excellent effectiveness in cell culture studies against bird flu (H5N1). The Company utilized intelligent bioinformatics tools to design the ligand (targeting molecule) used to construct this nanoviricide. This ligand was designed to achieve a strong binding activity against a broad range of different types of viruses.

There is currently no effective treatment for EKC nor are there any effective treatments for bird flu (H5N1), or rabies, either. Bird flu has spread further this year with Bangladesh reporting its first human case (http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/A/AS_MED_BANGLADESH_BIRD_FLU_AS OL-?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2008-05-22-11-51-52).

EKC or epidemic kerato-conjunctivitis is a very severe and highly contagious pink eye disease. It is most often caused by certain adenoviruses. However, some other viruses also cause similar conjunctivitis diseases. The Company anticipates that the eye-drop formulation that was successful against adenoviral EKC may also work well against the less severe forms of viral-induced conjunctival diseases (pink eye). While the Company currently has no approved product for the treatment of EKC and viral conjunctivitis, the treatment and prophylaxis market for these two classes of eye disease is expected to be of the order of several billion dollars annually.

The Company is working on making available some of the photographs from the EKC animal study at their website shortly.
