Cloudmark, Inc., the global leader in
carrier-grade messaging security, today announced Cloudmark Authority for
Social Networking Providers, the only commercially deployed solution to
effectively combat all categories of social networking abuse. Cloudmark
Authority — already in use at more than 100 of the world’s largest service
providers and mobile operator networks, including 11 of the top 12 in North
America — is uniquely architected to block spam, phishing and virus
threats on virtually any communications platform. With Authority for Social
Networking Providers, Cloudmark extends its industry-leading, carrier-grade
technology to protect against abuse targeted at social networks.

Cloudmark Authority for Social Networking Providers offers technology
designed to rapidly detect abuse in any content viewable by the user. Its
content-agnostic filtering capabilities go beyond securing transmitted
messages to covering all potential abuse points, including friend
invitations, pokes, chats, comments, bulletin boards, blogs, application
communications and profiles. Backed by a unique and powerful combination of
Advanced Message Fingerprinting(TM) and real-time feedback from the
Cloudmark Global Threat Network, Cloudmark Authority is able to rapidly
detect even the most advanced social networking threats, including mutating
spam and phishing attacks. Further, the solution can be deployed on any
social networking platform.

“The size and viral nature of social networks make Web 2.0 an attractive
new target for spammers,” said Hugh McCartney, chief executive officer at
Cloudmark. “We are already seeing the first instances of spam, phishing and
virus attacks aimed at popular social networks and firmly believe this is
just the tip of the iceberg. Social networking service providers must take
proactive measures to secure their sites or risk membership churn and
damage to their brand.”

With advertising revenues on social networks set to reach $2.2 billion in
2008*, the integrity of these sites must be protected to ensure that these
revenues are not jeopardized. Cloudmark Authority for Social Networking
Providers keeps out unwanted messages that could deter users from viewing
their pages or new members from joining the community.

Cloudmark Authority for Social Networking Providers, unlike competitive
e-mail filtering systems, can be deployed to protect all social networking
communication channels and is scalable enough to filter the millions or
even billions of messages that pass among members each day.

Cloudmark Authority for Social Networking Providers Key Features and
Benefits:

-- Complete Threat Protection -- Guards all communication channels,
including invitations, profiles and postings against spam, phishing and
    viruses.
-- Carrier-Grade Scalability -- Able to efficiently process billions of
user interactions, bringing significant reduction in hardware, power and
    administration.
-- Industry Leading Accuracy -- Community feedback together with Advanced
Message Fingerprinting enables rapid and precise detection of abuse; threat
updates every 45 seconds stop emerging attacks before they can spread.
-- Seamless Integration -- The Cloudmark Authority engine integrates into
    the most customized environments.

“There is currently no off-the-shelf product that users can buy to protect
themselves,” said Jamie de Guerre, chief technology officer at Cloudmark.
“The problem has to be solved at the network level by social networking
providers. Cloudmark is not only helping providers secure the communication
channels that are critical to the long-term success of their sites, but
also delivering comprehensive and highly accurate protection against the
next wave of abuse for the millions of users who actively participate in
these communities.”

New research shows that only half of American mothers intend to have their teenaged daughters vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV) if the girls are under the age of 13, despite government guidelines that suggest the opposite.

HPV, which is sexually transmitted, is the primary cause of cervical cancer. The first vaccine against the virus, Gardasil, was approved in 2006. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention currently recommends that 11- and 12-year-old girls be targeted for this vaccine, as most girls of this age are not yet sexually active, have not yet been exposed to HPV, and will therefore achieve maximum protection.

However, this study suggests that many mothers aren’t willing to follow those recommendations.

“Mothers had a lower intention to vaccinate [younger] daughters,” said study author Dr. Jessica Kahn, an associate professor of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. “This presents a challenge, …

HANOI (AFP) — A virus that causes hand, foot and mouth disease has infected around 400 people in Vietnam this year and led to an unknown number of deaths, a health official in the communist country said Tuesday.

The intestinal virus, which hits children hardest because of their weaker immune system, has killed at least 26 children in neighbouring China and infected thousands more, raising fears it could spread across the region.

“Vietnam has had about 2,000 cases of hand, food and mouth disease this year, of which about 20 percent were caused by EV71,” Nga told AFP, saying 90 percent of cases were in southern Vietnam, especially Ho Chi Minh City.

“There were some …
