KAMPALA (AFP) — A virus that killed 16 people and infected more than 50 others in western Uganda has been confirmed as Ebola, the health ministry said Thursday.

The deadly virus was confirmed in samples flown to a laboratory in Atlanta in the United States, the ministry said.

“We have been on the ground and we are deploying more people to manage the situation,” said Sam Zaramba, the country’s top medical official.

Zaramba said the first case was reported on November 10 in Bundibugyo district on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, where three patients were currently in an isolation ward.

“It is a dangerous disease as is any other haemorrhagic fever, but the …

Integrated email and Internet content security
provider Marshal has today launched Sophos for Marshal, the fully
integrated anti-virus and malware detection module for the gateway.
Available immediately as an add-on module to MailMarshal and WebMarshal,
Sophos for Marshal brings together the strengths of market-leading
anti-malware solutions from Sophos and Marshal’s highly acclaimed content
security products to provide even more choice for Marshal customers.

“Sophos for Marshal represents the culmination of an ongoing collaboration
between Marshal and Sophos to deliver a faster and more complete solution,”
said Bradley Anstis, vice president of Products for Marshal. “The new
module provides even more choice to Marshal customers and it broadens our
portfolio to deliver a truly integrated AV and malware module based on a
single engine.”

This version of Sophos for Marshal goes beyond mere malware detection by
providing total protection at the gateway against all known viruses,
spyware, worms and adware, as well as against any potentially unwanted
applications (PUA). Innovative Genotype® and Behavioral® technologies
are made available at the gateway level, better ensuring zero-day
protection against known and unknown threats.

Major improvements have been achieved with the integration of Sophos within
this Marshal solution:

-- The Sophos for Marshal module is now fully integrated with MailMarshal
    SMTP and WebMarshal.
-- Ease of installation: The new Sophos for Marshal module does not
require any additional software to be installed.
-- This tighter integrated scanner uses a separate updating service for
increased resilience and deeper integration into the Marshal user
interfaces, such as the ability to see current scanner status and signature
version of all installed scanners in the recent WebMarshal 6.0
    administration console.

The new integrated module not only offers Marshal customers more choice but
also creates additional revenue potential for security resellers.

Peter Norman, vice president of Product Management and Corporate
Development at Sophos, commented, “This collaboration with Marshal is an
important one. We are confident that Sophos for Marshal will prove to be
effective protection against both virus attacks and potentially unwanted
applications (PUA).”

Company Introduces Cream with Proven Efficacy in Transporting Bio-Active Components beyond the Level of the Skin’s Outer-Most Layer

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — eFoodSafety.com, Inc. (OTCBB: EFSF) today announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary Knock-Out Technologies, Ltd. has completed the research and development phase of incorporating its clinically proven product, Citroxin, into a unique trans-dermal cream with proven efficacy in transporting bio-active components beyond the level of the skin’s outer-most layer (stratus corneum).

The goal is to permit the active compounds in Citroxin to enter into systemic circulation, thereby allowing the proven health benefits of Citroxin to quickly improve numerous facets of internal health. On the back of the recent successful lab test demonstrating Citroxin’s ability to eradicate MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus), the initial aim of Trans-dermal Citroxin will be to allow Citroxin to be delivered in an efficacious dose directly into the bloodstream. This will arm the body’s defense systems to directly deal with most strains of Staph infection.

Robert Bowker, President of Knock-Out Technologies, Ltd., stated, "One of the key challenges in formulating a trans-dermal product was to create a suitable suspension of Citroxin’s components, coupled with the proper vehicle used for trans-dermal delivery. Through continued innovation, we believe we have successfully achieved this objective, resulting in a novel method for introducing Citroxin into the body through a route other than oral ingestion. This achievement is extremely important and beneficial, as many people who are ill or weakened by various factors cannot swallow pills. Additionally, these people, as well as many others, have a deficient ability to properly digest and assimilate nutrients through normal digestive mechanisms. We believe that Trans-dermal Citroxin provides a solution to overcoming these obstacles."

Trans-dermal delivery is a term that relates to any topically applied drug formulations that are meant to deliver one or more active ingredients into the overall circulation. Trans-dermal systems have been formulated to afford controlled delivery of specific drugs into systemic blood supply. These systems can help avoid some typical problems associated with oral ingestion of drugs and nutrients, including destruction of active components from stomach acid, nausea or stomach upset, and reflux from swallowing difficulties. Skin is normally impermeable to most substances. However, certain systems have been designed which allow the skin’s matrix to be permeated with an inactive compound that carries the active ingredient(s) through the normal barrier system. Several drugs are now in use in trans-dermal products, including anti-histamines, beta-blockers, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, contraceptives, insulin, hormones, and anti-virals.

Integrated Solution Delivers Unmatched Speed and Accuracy in a Dispersed Computing Environment

SAN DIEGO — ESET, the leader in proactive threat protection, today announced the general availability of ESET Smart Security Business Edition, a new, highly integrated security solution for enterprises and small-to-medium-sized businesses. It includes antivirus, antispyware, antispam and firewall features built on ESET’s award-winning advanced heuristic ThreatSense[R] detection system and the ESET NOD32 Antivirus scanning engine. The Business Edition also incorporates ESET’s Remote Administrator, allowing both ESET Smart Security and the new version of ESET NOD32 Antivirus to be deployed and managed remotely from a central location.

"ESET understands that businesses are looking for maximum protection, low system requirements, accurate results and fast scanning speeds–all at a low total cost of ownership," said Anton Zajac, CEO of ESET, LLC. "With ESET Smart Security, we’ve been able to deliver the industry’s highest level of accuracy with the fewest false-positives, thereby virtually eliminating the man hours traditionally spent chasing after inaccurate results. Our solution runs behind the scenes and even in large dispersed deployments, it operates with industry-leading scanning speed and near-zero impact on system performance."

With significantly lower performance overhead compared to the competition, ESET Smart Security uses only 40MB of disk space and scans systems up to 30-times faster than other products. And unlike security suites which combine standalone products, ESET Smart Security tightly integrates the antispyware, antispam and firewall features with the new version of ESET’s flagship ESET NOD32 Antivirus scanning engine. This tight integration allows each module to share information with the other to evaluate and classify every threat appropriately within the ThreatSense detection system.

ESET’s ThreatSense technology provides the industry’s highest level of accuracy. It is the only antivirus technology that has not missed an in-the-wild-virus in Virus Bulletin VB 100 testing over the past nine years, while producing only one false-positive during that time. It has also received more Advanced+ awards from AV-Comparatives.org for proactive protection than any other product.

Unique to ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 Antivirus V3.0 Business Edition:

* Hands-on service - All ESET customers receive the same level of excellent technical support service, whether an individual computer user or an SMB.

* Ease of installation - ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 Antivirus V3.0 Business Edition scanning engines are quick and easy to install, no matter what solution is currently running.

* Advanced threat protection network - ESET solutions are backed by ThreatSense.Net, a global early warning system built into the products. ThreatSense.Net extends the power of ThreatSense’s powerful analytics by automatically submitting samples of and information about new malware to ESET researchers for analysis, thus helping to close the window of vulnerability opened by new threats.

Availability

ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 Antivirus V3.0 Business Editions are available for purchase at www.eset.com as well as various Micro Center retail stores throughout the country.

ESET Smart Security Business Edition is available for a suggested retail price of US$40.99 (5-10 seats, per seat). ESET NOD32 Antivirus V3.0 Business Edition is available for a suggested retail price of US$32.99 (5-10 seats, per seat).

About ThreatSense

ESET solutions are built on ESET’s one-of-a-kind ThreatSense technology. This advanced heuristics engine enables proactive detection of malware not covered by even the most frequently updated signature-based products by decoding and analyzing executable code in real time, using an emulated environment. By allowing malware to execute in a secure virtual world, ESET is able to clearly differentiate between benign files and even the most sophisticated and cleverly-disguised malware. ESET Smart Security takes this advanced methodology to the next level by applying it to the integrated solution as a whole, passing evaluation information between its integrated features for the most accurate protection possible.

About ESET

ESET develops software solutions that deliver instant, comprehensive protection against evolving computer security threats. ESET pioneered and continues to lead the industry in proactive threat detection. Over the past 20 years, ESET’s NOD32 Antivirus has consistently achieved the highest accolades in all types of comparative testing. ESET’s flagship product, ESET NOD32 Antivirus, is the foundational product that builds out the ESET product line to include ESET Smart Security. ESET Smart Security is an integrated antivirus, antispyware, antispam and personal firewall solution that combines accuracy, speed and an extremely small system footprint to create the most effective security solution in the industry. Both products have an extremely efficient code base that eliminates the unnecessary large size found in some solutions. This means faster scanning that doesn’t slow down computers or networks. Sold in more than 110 countries, ESET has worldwide production headquarters in Bratislava, SK and worldwide distribution headquarters in San Diego, U.S. ESET also has offices in Bristol, U.K.; Buenos Aires, AR; Prague, CZ; and is globally represented by an extensive partner network. CINCINNATI — Meridian Bioscience, Inc. (NASDAQ:VIVO) today announced that it has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market two new upper respiratory tests: TRU FLU([R]) and TRU RSV([R]). These tests are based upon a new rapid test technology that features improved safety and space savings. TRU FLU([R]) detects both influenza A and influenza B while TRU RSV([R])detects for respiratory syncytial virus. These companion tests are ideal for the diagnosis of common upper respiratory diseases.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), up to 60 million people in the United States will contract influenza this year. More that 200,000 people are likely to be hospitalized due to the disease and approximately 36,000 people die each year from influenza. RSV is a virus which also circulates during the same time period, and is the most common cause of severe respiratory illness in small children. Influenza and RSV tests are often run simultaneously on the same patient specimens. The rapid diagnosis of influenza offers physicians the ability to treat promptly patients with antiviral medications and to avoid the prescribing of antibiotics that have no effect on influenza or RSV.

John A. Kraeutler, President and Chief Operating Officer, stated, "Upper respiratory disease caused by pathogens such as influenza and RSV are of serious worldwide concern. Our new TRU products are designed to provide rapid, accurate results with additional safety benefits for the lab. These new tests, which will be available during the current quarter, are manufactured at Meridian and are expected to improve profitability."

Such statements, whether expressed or implied, are based upon current expectations of the Company and speak only as of the date made. The Company assumes no obligation to publicly update any forward-looking statements. These statements are subject to various risks, uncertainties and other factors that could cause actual results to differ materially, including, without limitation, the following: Meridian’s continued growth depends, in part, on its ability to introduce into the marketplace enhancements of existing products or new products that incorporate technological advances, meet customer requirements and respond to products developed by Meridian’s competition. While Meridian has introduced a number of internally developed products, there can be no assurance that it will be successful in the future in introducing such products on a timely basis. Changes in the relative strength or weakness of the U.S. dollar can change expected results. One of Meridian’s main growth strategies is the acquisition of companies and product lines. There can be no assurance that additional acquisitions will be consummated or that, if consummated, will be successful and the acquired businesses successfully integrated into Meridian’s operations. Beware the Hallmark e-card. My mother didn't raise me to open e-mail attachments from strangers, but in the holiday season, I saw little risk in clicking something from that kindly greeting-card company. The worst that could happen, I figured, was losing a couple of seconds of my life to a dancing turkey.

As soon as I clicked the link, I regretted it. Expecting the worst, I Googled the caption on the e-mail: "You've received a Hallmark e-card!" and found what I feared at Snopes.com, the urban-legend site I always send friends to when I smell a scam. After some more research, I learned I had set a place at my computer table for Trojan.vundo. Hallmark doesn't send e-cards without telling you whom they're from, says spokeswoman Linda Odell. "Whoever is doing this is trading on a name that people trust. We certainly don't like that." The next morning, a suspicious …

SAN FRANCISCO — One of the nastiest — and most persistent — sources of spam just turned a year old.

Since it touched down in e-mail inboxes, the Storm virus has infected at least 1 million PCs worldwide and is responsible for billions of spam messages. Since July, e-mail management company Postini alone has blocked nearly 1.5 billion copies of Storm. (Before Storm hit, Postini blocked about 1 million tainted e-mail messages a day.)

And anti-spam experts expect even more rumblings during the holidays. They predict Storm — which is spread largely through virus-infected PCs — will set record volumes by the end of the year, including up to 500 million messages during the holiday season.

“There does not seem to be any let-up in sight,” says Adam Swidler, a senior manager at Postini, a subsidiary of Google. “Storm is perfectly capable of virtually unlimited mutations.”

The chameleon-like …

Millions at Risk of Discovering the Power of Prayer

PHOENIX — Humanity’s most common universal expression has already spread to every corner of the globe. Now, one Web site is making certain it reaches those in need everywhere in between.

Using the power of prayer, iPrayToday.com is offering strength and comfort to people of all religions during their most difficult situations.

"We’re trying to change the world one prayer at a time," said Paige Wheeler, CEO of iPrayToday.com "Not only is prayer priceless, it just so happens that it is free. What a paradox. Prayer is one of the most amazing tools we have - second only to good deeds."

The non-denominational prayer sanctuary allows anyone to submit prayer requests and provide support by responding to prayer needs. People on the receiving end of prayers get information once a day about those who prayed for their intentions. Visitors to iPrayToday.com can also send the gift of prayer to friends and family via e-mail, and they can remain anonymous, whether submitting prayers or answering requests.

"When you pray for people you don’t know, or for situations of which you were not previously aware, you get a very powerful and gratifying feeling. Try it and you’ll see," Wheeler said.

iPrayToday.com subscribers receive a new prayer daily via email alert, giving them an opportunity to assist a situation that is in desperate need of prayer. People are also invited to submit their own ideas for iPrayToday.com’s worldwide prayer reminder. The daily prayer service is free and available at www.ipraytoday.com/signup.php.

Although iPrayToday.com was a Christian calling for Wheeler, she is adamant about not excluding anyone from receiving the benefits of prayer and getting involved with the spiritual community at iPrayToday.com.

"Not only is the site a great way for children to get involved with prayer, especially during the holidays, but it’s also a practical site employers can offer to employees who are going through challenges during the work day," she added.

Increasing research supports the power of prayer in healing. Rather than citing others’ studies on the power of prayer, Wheeler is planning to use the iPrayToday database to conduct her own studies.

About iPrayToday.com

Launched in November 2007, iPrayToday.com is the result of a Christian calling for Paige Wheeler, a wife, mother of two and founder/president of Excessities Non-profit. An online prayer sanctuary for all faiths, iPrayToday.com offers people throughout the world a place to request prayers, pray for others and watch the power of prayer unfold. All services on the site are free. Additional information is available at www.ipraytoday.com.
