BitDefender detects 99.51% of malware in new independent testing by leading security authority

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — BitDefender([R]), a global provider of award-winning antivirus software and data security solutions, announced today that its antivirus engine detected 99.51% of the malware in independent tests conducted by AV-Test.org of Germany. In doing so, BitDefender led all other single-engine competitors in finding the most malware, once again demonstrating the powerful capabilities of its patent-pending B-HAVE([R]) advanced detection techniques.

Performed earlier this month, the test measured the capabilities of 29 competing single- and multi-engine antivirus solutions on their ability to detect nearly a million different pieces of malware using the most up-to-date signatures. Only validated samples of malware found in the wild and collected by AV-Test in the past six months were used in the testing process.

"We are very pleased with the results of this test and will strive to continue leading the pack among top antivirus vendors," commented Bogdan Dumitru, BitDefender’s chief technology officer. "AV-Test’s results demonstrate BitDefender’s ongoing commitment to providing home and SMB users with solutions that offer the absolute highest levels of malware protection. The timing of these results is ideal, as it shows the level of protection now available in BitDefender 2008, our newest line of security solutions."

For further details on the results of this test, please visit AV-Test.org (http://www.av-test.org). Details on the company’s testing techniques can also be obtained here.

MADRID (AFP) — Experts at Spain’s environment ministry have appealed for help abroad to track a potentially deadly virus that threatens a species of dolphins in the Mediterranean.

The morbillivirus, which causes measles in its human form, has been found in several striped dolphins washed up dead on beaches in Spain in recent weeks, said a ministry statement.

“According to analyses which were carried out, the virus identified is practically the same as the one that caused a …

BERLIN (AFP) — Left-wing members of the ruling coalition have objected strongly to plans by the German interior ministry to enlist “Trojans”, malicious programmes sent in electronic mail, to spy on terror suspects.

According to a proposed plank of new anti-terror legislation, which was confirmed by a ministry spokesman, special software would smuggle itself into a suspect’s computer disguised as a harmless e-mail.

It would then feed information back to police servers whenever the computer was connected to the Internet.

The plans, which have circulated online and in the press in recent days, have met with sharp criticism both from the GdP police union and from Social Democrats (SPD), who are partners in the left-right ruling coalition.

Opponents argue that the plans would violate Germany’s Basic Law and its privacy protections, particularly if the Trojan software was hidden in an official e-mail.

“The …

Company Donates Nearly 1 Million Repellent Wipes to California Agencies

ST. LOUIS — Spectrum Brands wants Californians to have two fewer worries this Labor Day weekend — mosquitoes and the West Nile virus (WNV). Following Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s declaration of a state of emergency to prevent the spread of WNV in Colusa, Kern, San Joaquin, and Glenn counties — the areas hit hardest by the virus – the company is donating 800,000 of its mosquito-repellent products to local agencies, as well as the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District.

According to the California WNV Web site (http://www.westnile.ca.gov), as of Aug. 27, there have been eight deaths this year in California because of the virus – three in Kern County and one each in Colusa, Fresno, Kings, Los Angeles and San Joaquin counties. This is three times higher than the same time last year.

This Thursday and Friday, Aug. 30 and 31, residents of Kern, San Joaquin and Glenn Counties, can receive Cutter insect repellent wipes for free at local agencies. Wipes will be available for Colusa residents beginning Friday. The products will continue to be handed out until quantities are exhausted.

"We are proud to make this donation, and believe this is especially timely as people prepare to take advantage of nice weather this holiday weekend," said Gary Ramey, divisional vice president, Spectrum Brands. "Most people know to protect themselves from sun exposure and dehydration, but in places such as California, we’re seeing another danger that should be of concern - mosquitoes that may carry the West Nile virus. Repellent should be the first line of defense."

California has responded to the West Nile virus emergency with insecticide spraying of public areas. However, despite the dangers of mosquito bites, only 40 percent of adults use repellents, according to industry and health agencies surveys. In one minute or less, people can protect themselves from mosquitoes, ticks, biting flies, and other insects by applying a repellent with an active ingredient approved by the Centers for Disease Control. In addition to DEET-based insect repellents, the CDC also recommends using repellents with Picaridin, like Spectrum Brands’ Cutter[R] Advanced[TM] Insect Repellent, and Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus, which is marketed as Cutter[R] Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus Insect Repellent.

"There are two important criteria when choosing a repellent," said Joe Conlon, technical adviser for the American Mosquito Control Association and former Navy medical entomologist. "Make sure it’s an active ingredient recommended by the CDC and check the percentage of that active ingredient to know how many hours of protection the repellent will provide. The most important thing is for people to pick a repellent they are going to use — and then use it."

The Cutter All Family Insect repellent wipes that are being donated by Spectrum Brands are 7.15 percent DEET and, in accordance with the CDC recommendation, can be used on adults, children and infants two months and older.

To further limit mosquito activity, Conlon also suggests inspecting door and window screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering a home; using outdoor foggers and lawn sprays to kill mosquitoes where they hide; and removing standing water in birdbaths, flowerpots, pool covers, and other places water collects.

Insect repellent will be available, at no cost, at the following agencies:

Tokyo, Aug 27, 2007 - (JCN) - Toray Industries announced on August 22 that the company confirmed for the first time in the world that hepatitis C virus (HCV) particles produced using a novel HCV culture system inactivated have the potential for practical use as an HCV vaccine in experiments using mice.

The culture system was established through the company’s joint research on the development of an HCV vaccine with the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) and the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute for Neuroscience (TMIN), Tokyo Metropolitan Organization for Medical Research.

Since its 2005 world-first in vitro cultivation of HCV with TMIN, Toray has been seeking the potential of HCV particlest for use as an HCV vaccine in collaboration with NIID.

Based on the research it has conducted, the company has successfully increased the efficiency of HCV production by 10,000 times through the research by preparing and using a human liver cell line which produces more HCV particles than conventional cells producing HCV particles.

Moreover, the company confirmed that the HCV infection of cultured human hepatocytes was suppressed by the serum which was obtained from the mice injected with inactivated HCV particles.

Based on the confirmation of the possibility of using these inactivated HCV particles as a HCV vaccine, the company will continue to work with NIID for further research and development to optimize the HCV particles for a vaccine and establish a culture method appropriate for industrial production.

The HCV vaccine is expected to not only become a new prophylactic drug to prevent new HCV infection, but also serve as a therapeutic drug for HCV-infected people. The company hopes that this HCV vaccine will be very good news for millions of patients suffering from hepatitis C worldwide. JCN Newswire. All rights reserved. ATLANTA — The restaurant industry may have to rethink its sick-leave policies because the usual, current procedures pose a significant risk to public health, operators learned during a conference here on the runaway dangers of viral infections.

The research behind those findings could foster support for measures long resisted by the industry, including paid sick leave and viral inoculations of all food handlers–if not all young people. Researchers’ conclusions also are likely to rescript the conversations that take place between restaurant managers and employees who say they’re sick, with employers asking questions about staffers’ bathroom habits, participating experts agreed.

"You’re going to have to do things differently," said Dr. Alan Harris, an epidemiologist for Rush-University Medical Center in Illinois and a food-safety advisor to McDonald’s Corp.

The near-indictment of prevailing sick-leave practices was just one of the scientific discussions that seemed to startle the restaurant operators, suppliers and regulators attending "Viruses." Co-hosted by the National Restaurant Association and its educational sister, the NRA Educational Foundation, the two-day conference is believed to be the first industry gathering devoted to viruses, which participants invariably cited as the gravest food-safety issue now confronting the industry.

In particular, they noted the surge in restaurant-related infections from norovirus. The bug, also known as the cruise-ship or Norwalk virus, is hands-down the leading cause today of food contaminations, accounting for about 23 million of the 30.9 million cases of foodborne illness that are now tabulated annually by government agencies. About 39 percent of those persons afflicted with vomiting, diarrhea and other symptoms of the infections are sickened in foodservice establishments, said Christine Moe, a viral expert and researcher at Emory University.

An official with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention attributed 41 percent of the nation’s norovirus outbreaks to restaurants and delis, citing the agency’s updated data.

"There is no reduction noticed in the incidence," said Carol Selman, senior environmental health officer for the CDC. "Eating outside the home is a risk factor for foodborne disease."

Jan Vinje, head of the CDC’s National Calicivirus Laboratory, noted that the end of 2006 was a particularly "enormous winter" for the norovirus, which falls within the larger classification of calicivirus. During the last few months of the year, outbreaks affecting about 1,500 restaurant customers were reported in Syracuse, N.Y.; Lansing, Mich.; and Indianapolis. Three restaurants in total were implicated.

Yet, as many speakers observed, norovirus was viewed until recently as much less of a restaurant threat than bacterial pathogens like E. coli, salmonella and listeria. The industry’s leading defense against foodborne illness, the ServSafe training and certification program, focuses on microbes of that sort.

"A lot of what we’d been doing is geared to bacteria," said Jim Mann, executive director of a safety advocacy group called the Handwashing Institute for Life. "We have to change that, because this new bug is coming in through both doors."

As Mann indicated, the prevalence of norovirus in restaurants can be attributed in part to the potential for contamination from guests as well as employees. As few as 10 particles of the virus can result in an infection, and the virus is extremely difficult to eradicate.

Attendees learned just how difficult from Moe’s presentation. A study conducted under her auspices determined that norovirus can survive on kitchen and bathroom surfaces for three to six weeks. The potential for infection can persist in water for 61 days or longer.

The audience seemed particularly stunned by Moe’s finding that employees who contract norovirus can pose a significant threat of contamination to guests and co-workers for weeks after symptoms disappear. As several speakers and attendees noted, virtually every restaurant operator prohibits employees from working if they’ve shown those classic signs of a noroviral infection and then order them to stay home for two or three more days as a measure of safety. By that time, according to the prevailing wisdom, the risk of spreading the virus has passed.

But employees showing no symptoms may still "shed" the norovirus, or excrete it in large quantities in their feces, for 20 to 35 days afterward, Moe determined in her studies. A gram of feces could contain tens of millions of norovirus. With just 10 organisms needed to infect someone, the smallest residue on a food worker’s hand could be sufficient to contaminate a large number of guests.

"Hand washing and the wearing of gloves is the only way to control it," Moe said.

Yet, as others noted, neither of those remedies is fail-safe.

Alan Tart, a regional food specialist for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, calculated that the feces of a food worker shedding norovirus would contain 10 million of the microbes.
