Electron Micrographs Confirm Virus Destruction

WEST HAVEN, Conn. — In startling new imagery, a drug developed by NanoViricides, Inc. (Pink Sheets: NNVC) dismantles a virus particle in a visual demonstration of the novel mechanism of action of nanoviricides in vitro.

NanoViricides’ President Dr. Anil Diwan unveiled the electron micrographs at the Nano Science and Technology Institute’s (NSTI) Nanotech2007 Conference in Santa Clara, CA, May 24. An abstract of the presentation can be viewed at BioNano: NanoMedicine, Diagnostics, Imaging & Therapies (http://www.nsti.org/Nanotech2007/showabstract.html?absno=281).

The electron micrograph can be seen on the company’s website at NanoViricides Dismantling MCMV as seen in TEM (http://www.nanoviricides.com/nnvc-tem.pdf).

Different broad-spectrum nanoviricides were shown to dismantle the envelope coat of the murine cytomegalovirus, (mCMV) releasing the virus capsids it contains. The released capsids, which contain the genome of the virus particle, are no longer infectious. "This is the first visual demonstration that nanoviricides attack viruses in vitro just the way we’ve designed them to do so," said Dr. Diwan.

The murine CMV is closely related to the human CMV, which causes various diseases, including ocular diseases such as retinopathy and blindness, especially in immunocompromised patients such as HIV/AIDS cases. CMV has become a major management problem in persons living with AIDS and represents a therapeutic challenge to physicians caring for this population.

Dr. Diwan also presented survival data in mice infected with an otherwise lethal dose of rabies. "That the nanoviricides treatments enabled the animals to survive at all is a major breakthrough in rabies," he noted.

"We now know that our broad spectrum drug candidates are capable of attacking H5N1 bird flu viruses of both Clade 1 and Clade 2 varieties, common influenzas, rabies, and also cytomegalovirus," said NanoViricides’ CEO Eugene Seymour, MD, MPH.

"Just as ampicillin works against a wide range of bacteria, we believe broad-spectrum nanoviricides can be designed to work against a wide range of viruses," he added further.

There can be no assurance that this demonstration or the results of our animal studies may ever lead to the development of a nanopharmaceutical product approved for commercial resale or that, if approved, a commercial market will develop for our products.

HONG KONG (AFP) — Hong Kong health officials were Wednesday testing a starling found dead with suspected bird flu.

Authorities said preliminary tests indicated the bird, found in the densely populated Mong Kok district, was infected with H5 flu, but they could not yet say whether it was the killer H5N1 strain. Further tests are being conducted.

More than a dozen wild birds have been found dead in Hong Kong with the H5N1 virus, which has killed almost 200 people and ravaged poultry flocks worldwide since 2003.

Migratory birds have …

GENEVA (AFP) — The World Health Organisation on Wednesday adopted an interim deal on bird flu virus sample sharing, temporarily resolving a dispute that was threatening efforts to prevent a global pandemic, a senior official said.

The 193 member states in the agency’s assembly approved a resolution on sharing viruses and access to flu vaccines without a vote.

“Countries have agreed to share viruses until another mechanism is set up,” WHO transmissible diseases chief David Heymann said.

“This is a very important commitment by the 193 countries,” he told journalists.

Indonesia — the country most affected by H5N1 bird flu this year — had stopped sending viruses to foreign laboratories until recently and demanded changes to the global flu surveillance system to ensure developing countries get a fair deal.

Sample sharing allows confirmation of suspected human cases of bird flu by one of eight WHO reference laboratories around the world. The …

CORPORATE IT UPDATE-(C)1995-2007 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Kaspersky Lab, a developer of secure content management solutions, has confirmed that its Anti-Virus for Microsoft ISA Server version 5.6 is now compatible with Microsoft ISA Server 2006 Enterprise Edition.

Kaspersky Lab said the application offers centralised management of protection parameters for all servers operating as server array members and also enables centralised updating of anti-virus databases.

According to Kaspersky Lab, Anti-Virus for Microsoft ISA Server provides anti-virus protection for all files transferred using the HTTP and FTP protocols, via Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server. It said the application serves as a filter, intercepting packets transferred via HTTP and FTP protocols, isolating controlled objects from the data and analysing them for viruses.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Microsoft ISA Server includes features such as monitoring of system operation statistics and diagnostics and flexible configuration of virus scanning parameters. It is managed via an interface designed for the Microsoft Management Console, which ensures full control over the operation for system administrators and allows them to reduce server load with lists of trusted servers and excluded object types.

ITHACA, New York (ENS) —
–>

A lethal fish virus in the Great Lakes and neighboring waterways is approaching epidemic proportions, says Paul Bowser, Cornell professor of aquatic animal medicine in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

The viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus, VHSV, which causes anemia and hemorrhaging in fish, has now been identified in 19 species and poses a potential threat to New York’s $1.2 billion sport-fishing industry.

This month the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources made a presumptive identification of the virus for the first time in the Lake Winnebago chain of inland lakes about 25 miles south of Green Bay on Lake Michigan - confirmation is pending.

“It’s pretty obvious this is an epidemic even if it isn’t official,” said Bowser. “There are just so many species affected and so many mortalities.”

Three new fish kills have occurred in 2007 in New York waters since …
