Relationship with Kaspersky Lab to Accelerate UTM Processing for System Manufacturers

CUPERTINO, Calif. — Mistletoe Technologies, Inc., developer of the industry’s first complete security system-on-a-chip (SoC) featuring VPN, firewall and denial of service prevention applications in silicon, today announced an agreement with Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions. The collaboration is an important part of Mistletoe Technologies’ on-going effort to integrate best-in-class software that will enable system manufacturers to increase unified threat management (UTM) performance and network security, while reducing system development time and expense.

Combining various features such as anti-virus, URL filtering, and anti-spam, UTM products provide a holistic and economical approach to security that is well suited for many small and medium businesses and enterprises (SMB/SME). Mistletoe Technologies is the first security silicon architecture to enable UTM features without sacrificing VPN and firewall performance. Historically, with general purpose processors, security system performance was sacrificed to accommodate UTM features; this served as a deterrent to end-users seeking to fully or reliably activate these features.

"Mistletoe Technologies’ security SoC architecture provides a new and economical means to significantly increase the performance of antivirus processing in security appliances," said Peter Laakkonen, President of Kaspersky Lab Customized Solutions. "This architecture, combined with Kaspersky Lab’s best-of-breed antivirus technology, enables reliable high-performance security to be deployed in SMB/SME appliances."

Kaspersky Lab’s antivirus technology combines traditional anti-virus defense methods with the latest comprehensive and proactive technologies to provide consumers with solid and dependable protection against viruses, spyware, crimeware and other malware. Used in conjunction with Mistletoe Technologies’ reference designs, this combination will provide improved services, support and simplified network setup and management.

"Kaspersky Lab’s antivirus technology complements our goals for the UTM market with its high standard of consumer protection against viruses, Trojans, worms, spyware, rootkits and phishing," said Michael McDonald, vice president of marketing for Mistletoe Technologies. "Integrating software from best-in-breed companies such as Kaspersky Lab enables Mistletoe Technologies to provide a compelling value to UTM system manufacturers and end-users by increasing security, performance and functionality, while reducing capital and operational costs."

Products using this combined technology will be on display at Mistletoe Technologies’ RSA booth, #2348, from February 5-9 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, CA.

Cloudmark and Datacraft
have signed a partnership agreement under which Datacraft will market, sell
and support Cloudmark’s suite of anti-phishing, anti-virus and anti-spam
solutions to service providers in all 13 countries in which Datacraft
operates.

The strategic alliance will see Datacraft offering Cloudmark Authority™, a
carrier-grade solution that delivers the industry’s fastest and
highest-performing defense against all forms of messaging abuse. Cloudmark
Authority is easy to use, scalable and requires significantly less network
processing power than other solutions in the market.

“Cloudmark offers unparalleled effectiveness in fighting all forms of spam,
phishing and virus attacks,” said Bill Padfield, CEO of Datacraft.
“Cloudmark has proven to be the most widely integrated email anti-abuse
solution in the carrier market and will greatly benefit our clients in the
telecommunications industry. Today, there are more than 60 wired and
wireless carriers around the globe, including NEC BIGLOBE, NTT OCN and NTT
Plala, some of Japan’s largest Internet service providers, that have
integrated Cloudmark into their network.”

Spam, phishing, virus and other unwanted emails account for more than 90
percent of the 100 billion messages now sent daily. Service providers bear
the economic burden of messaging abuse, which threatens subscriber
retention and drives up operational and capital expenses. Gaining control
over growing messaging abuse will play a key role in the business model of
service providers in Asia and throughout the world.

“Datacraft possesses a deep knowledge of the service provider market with
leading carriers using its solutions and services. We are stepping up our
focus in Asia Pacific and Datacraft is the ideal strategic partner,” said
Jacinta Tobin, Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Business Development
for Cloudmark. “This agreement will in turn enable Datacraft to deliver
unrivaled spam, virus, and phishing protection to service providers
throughout Asia Pacific.”

Cloudmark Authority has repeatedly been proven in service provider trials
to be the industry’s most accurate and efficient messaging anti-abuse
solution. Authority uniquely leverages intelligent message fingerprinting
and the world’s largest threat detection network to block spam, phishing,
viruses and mutated threats significantly faster than rules- or
heuristics-based legacy solutions.

Whereas legacy solutions may require witnessing a sufficient volume of
abuse to begin blocking, Authority can act as soon as a threat, even a
highly-targeted phishing attack, has been identified by and corroborated by
the Cloudmark Global Threat Network and Trust Evaluation System. Once an
abusive message has been fingerprinted, any mutation of this threat will be
blocked in real time. This early detection is critical in stopping
polymorphic and advanced virus attacks from causing widespread damage.

In addition, Authority was architected for service provider environments
that demand efficient processing of large volumes of messages. Unlike
traditional solutions that use processing-intensive rule sets, Authority
scans messages for all forms of abuse using an in-memory cache of verified
fingerprints that is updated every minute. Cloudmark’s approach enables
wire-speed processing while only utilizing 1/10th of the system resources
of traditional rules-based solutions. It also combines anti-spam,
anti-phishing and anti-virus protection on a single platform to maximize
efficiency.

The author of a 1989 federal law that criminalized the development of biological weapons says the government’s plan to genetically engineer viruses and bacteria at Fort Detrick in order to create deadlier organisms for defensive research is illegal. Francis A. Boyle filed his comments Thursday with Fort Detrick officials who are completing an environmental review of a proposed laboratory to replace the existing U.S.

Military Institute of Infectious Diseases. The Army maintains that its research at Fort Detrick has been, and will continue to be, solely defensive in nature. Boyle says participants would be subject to criminal penalties under the Biological Weapons Anti-Terrorism Act of 1989, which he drafted and which was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush in 1990.
