First Time Offering Assists IT Professionals to Repair Damaged Files Instantly

MILLBURN, N.J. — GRISOFT, the developer of AVG security software, today introduced AVG Rescue CD, a new offering for IT professionals designed to remove and repair damage caused by viruses, spyware and other malicious programs on computers running Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server. The AVG Rescue CD, which is based on AVG Anti-Malware 7.5, provides critical updates of virus and spyware databases automatically.

Important features of AVG Rescue CD include the ability to update the malware definitions database on the fly. Until now it was necessary to burn a rescue CD with up-to-date definitions before attempting a restoration. AVG Rescue CD also sets itself apart from competing products by providing more complete protection against viruses and spyware, and extensive administration and recovery tools with the ability to update definition files using a hard drive or an external USB memory device.

"AVG Rescue CD is a useful tool for IT pros enabling them to efficiently remove dangerous software from exploited PCs with the same level of confidence they enjoy with other AVG products," said Larry Bridwell, Vice President of Global Security Strategies of GRISOFT. "IT pros will also be able to take advantage of comprehensive administrative tools and features to make them more productive".

AVG Rescue CD makes it easier to detect and remove viruses, spyware and other malware running on MS Windows PE. The CD includes Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware and a set of administration tools and utilities. It also features a file manager, a Windows registry editor, a scan disk tool for testing hard drive integrity, a detailed IP Config tool, and more.

Pricing and Availability

The price of AVG Rescue CD is $149.95 for a one year license. Existing customers using any commercial AVG product can obtain AVG Rescue CD for a discounted price of $99.95.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (ENS) — –> Long-dormant strains of influenza, packed in ice in remote global outposts, could be unleashed by melting and migratory birds, according to Professor Scott Rogers at Bowling Green State University. Chair of the Department of Biological Science, Dr. Rogers is in the middle of a two-year, $139,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease.

“We’ve found viral RNA in the ice in Siberia, and it’s along the major flight paths of migrating waterfowl,” whose pathways take them to North America, Asia and Australia, and interconnect with other migratory paths to Europe and Africa, explains Rogers. The virus that Rogers and his collaborators have found is closest to a strain that circulated from 1933-38 and again in the 1960s. Viruses, he says, can be preserved in ice over long periods of time, then released decades later when humans may …

DHAKA (AFP) — Health workers have begun a drive across Bangladesh to immunise 24 million children under five against polio to combat the crippling virus that has staged a comeback in the South Asian nation. Muslim mosques and Hindu temples blared messages through loudspeakers urging parents to bring their children to be immunised using an oral vaccine.

“The response is very impressive. Millions of parents are thronging to health centres to get their kids vaccinated against polio,” health ministry spokesman Golam Kibria said Saturday. The ministry said it aimed to immunise all 24 million children under the age of five Saturday. Children under five are most at risk from the virus. It planned to repeat the process at least nine times over the next 12 months, administering oral drops to each child again, to ensure no-one was left out. It said administering repeat drops would have no side-effects. Bangladesh had …

ST. LOUIS — GenoMed (Pink Sheets:GMED), a Next Generation Disease Management company that uses genomics to solve diseases in humans and animals, today announced that the fourth horse in its expanded trial for West Nile virus encephalitis is recovering nicely one week after starting GenoMed’s treatment.

A week ago, a horse owner in Seguin, Texas telephoned GenoMed to say that her horse, named Seminole Wind, was dying. Despite West Nile virus serum, steroids, and Benamine, the horse could no longer stand, or even blink when its eye was touched.

Within 2 hours of the first dose of GenoMed’s treatment, the horse got to his feet and began drinking and eating, but went down again 24 hours later. Since then, he’s been slowly getting stronger. Recently, he began staying on his feet longer.

West Nile virus encephalitis affects horses more severely than people, and the odds of recovery are slimmer.

Said Dr. Moskowitz, GenoMed’s CEO and Chief Medical Officer, "After an initial response to our treatment, this horse relapsed. We saw this with our previous horse, whose treatment was stopped. But this horse’s owner persevered. Seminole Wind seemed to get slightly better after each dose, only to fall back. He slept a lot. This is our first horse to recover after being so sick. Normally, going down means death within a couple of days."

Added Dr. Moskowitz, "This past week has been very tough for the owner, who has shown incredible persistence and TLC for her horse. A stronger medication may work better next time."

Dr. Moskowitz concluded, "Seminole Wind showed that our approach to West Nile virus is worth pursuing. Most exciting is that our approach could work for most viruses, including avian influenza or bird flu. With each clinical case, we learn more."

Early treatment of WNV encephalitis in humans has yielded the best results, so public awareness of GenoMed’s treatment is important. A small case series involving the company’s first 8 patients was published in a peer-reviewed medical journal in 2004.

About GenoMed

The protocol for West Nile virus is available for free from GenoMed’s website, www.genomed.com, as is GenoMed’s protocol for avian influenza ("bird flu"). Horse owners are encouraged to contact Dr. Moskowitz directly (see contact information above) to discuss drugs and dosing.

IBM Offers Customers Comprehensive Desktop Protection

ARMONK, N.Y. — IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced it has incorporated additional features for antivirus and anti-spyware into its Internet Security Systems[TM] Proventia[R] Desktop Endpoint Security product. The combined feature set will provide customers with a comprehensive desktop protection solution. As a result of an alliance with BitDefender, IBM Internet Security Systems will complement its spyware blocking technology and patented, behavioral-based Virus Prevention System (VPS) with BitDefender’s anti-spyware and antivirus solutions.

Internet Security Systems VPS technology is designed to be highly effective at preventing unknown zero-day attacks from entering a corporate network, blocking well over 90 percent of new viruses without a signature update on a typical network. The new layers of protection from BitDefender will provide customers with capabilities for scanning and removing known viruses and spyware from their systems.

"In today’s complicated threat landscape, no single layer of security can adequately protect an organization from attack," said Greg Adams, vice president of product development for IBM Internet Security Systems. "However, the continual purchase of incompatible security products and endpoint agents can quickly become unbearable for enterprises to manage. As a solution to these opposing issues, we continue to add layers of protection to our existing integrated security platform to provide customers with a robust, centrally managed security solution that can help them avoid the need to implement additional products to deal with each emerging threat."

Proventia Desktop currently offers the combined functionality of personal firewall, intrusion prevention, buffer overflow exploit prevention, application and communications protection and virus prevention technologies. Through this alliance with BitDefender for additional antivirus and anti-spyware capabilities, IBM Internet Security Systems answers the market demand for comprehensive desktop protection in a single agent. The various layers of the product are designed to work together seamlessly and automatically combat the myriad of threats encountered on workstations and laptops.

"For each type of security technology (firewalls, antivirus, anti-spyware, etc.), there are attackers who are constantly working on ways to evade it to obtain unauthorized access to a network," said Eric Eder, founder and CTO of Intelligent Connections, an IBM partner. "Attack vectors designed to exploit each type of technology require a multi-layered security model for protection. Proventia Desktop provides a multi-layered security approach with deployment of a single agent and unified management, which can lower administrative overhead and associated costs. If a threat is designed to bypass one type of security technology, it can be thwarted by a series of other blocking technologies as it attempts to infiltrate the target machine. We are excited to offer our customers such powerful desktop protection in a single agent."

Through its Proventia protection platform, IBM Internet Security Systems provides comprehensive, multi-layered protection for enterprises from network to host. By infusing all of its products with security intelligence from the Internet Security Systems X-Force[R] research and development group, IBM’s solution is designed to protect customers ahead of the threat, before their business assets are impacted by online intrusions. Through its unique Virtual Patch[R] technology, IBM helps shield business assets from attack until companies are able to schedule time to apply patches from affected vendors. With these additional antivirus and anti-spyware features in Internet Security Systems Proventia Desktop, and the end-point compliance and provisioning capabilities from Tivoli, IBM delivers a robust set of security features for the desktop.

Proventia Desktop with new antivirus and anti-spyware features is scheduled to be available by the end of the year. Antivirus and anti-spyware content updates will be made available via annual subscription. Further information on Proventia Desktop can be found at: http://iss.net/products/Proventia_Desktop/index.html.

Trojan horses, worms and other nasty viruses have gone wireless–and could be targeting your cell phone. CNET.com called 2006 “the year of mobile malware,” and software experts say the number of known viruses has more than doubled since January. Phone bugs infect your handset, then multiply via text or picture messages sent to your contacts.

Your phone might still function, but all those texts can spike your bill and clog the network. Phone companies and service providers are scrambling to block mobile malware. Jan Volzke, an executive at McAfee, says some …
