INTERNET BUSINESS NEWS-(C)1995-2006 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

SoftScan, a provider of a hosted spam and virus e-mail filtering service, has announced its August spam and virus statistics.

According to the company, the percentage of viruses was only 1.02% in all e-mails scanned by SoftScan in August 2006. 89.50% of all viruses stopped by SoftScan were classified as phishing. The percentage of phishing e-mails stopped by SoftScan has increased in the last few months. However, SoftScan believes this is not a real increase in the number of phishing e-mails sent, but rather a result of improved or additional detection by anti-virus scanners.

The percentage of spam remained very high at 87.72%, but SoftScan expects it to reduce in September, when the traditional summer holiday season comes to a close. Then the increase in legitimate business email will push the percentage of spam back to its more regular level of 85%, SoftScan claims.
