Worldwide Computer Products News-30 May 2006-eEye Digital Security finds flaw in Symantec anti-virus business software(C)1995-2006 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

A vulnerability in anti-virus business security software from Symantec, a manufacturer of anti-virus software, has reportedly been found by eEye Digital Security, a provider of Network security & vulnerability management software.

According to researchers at eEye Digital Security, the flaw could enable a worm to be created, to take over a computer and edit, remove and delete programs and files, without input from the user. eEye Digital Security said the flaw can be triggered from another location and provide system-level access for the attacker and deemed the threat as high.

Symantec said it is investigating the issue and claimed the flaw does not affect its Norton consumer product range. It stated that its Client Security 3.1 and AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.1 solutions do contain the flaw, which could enable a machine to be attacked by a remote user.

Symantec said it has not received any reports that the vulnerability has been exploited and confirmed fixes have been identified for the affected products.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — F-Secure(R) Corporation (HEX:FSC), the leading Internet security provider, has signed a strategic agreement with Barclays Bank to provide its two million online banking customers with a free two-year license of F-Secure Anti-Virus.

This significant investment demonstrates Barclays’ commitment to keeping customers safe from hacking attempts, viruses and other malware while using the Internet — not just when they’re banking online. Barclays will be marketing the software to its online customers via its website and direct mail.

The bank selected F-Secure for the technical strength of its anti-virus offering, speed of response to emerging Internet security threats and high levels of service and customer support.

Risto Siilasmaa, President and CEO at F-Secure, commented: "F-Secure’s research labs work around the clock to ensure a level of protection not found in rival products. Independent studies in 2004 and 2005 show that F-Secure’s response time to new threats is significantly faster than our major competitors. Our anti-virus protection, desktop firewall with intrusion prevention, anti-spam and anti-spyware solutions have been selected by Barclays as ‘best of breed’. Barclays knows it is offering customers the best available online protection and, with our 24/7 helpline, the best customer service."

Jeremy Law, Head of Business Development for Electronic Banking at Barclays Bank, added, "Studies show that nearly two-thirds of home PCs don’t have active virus protection, and one in five is actually infected by a virus, placing people at risk from data theft as well as damage to their computers. Because of the risks, some people are concerned about the security of online banking, despite banks’ best efforts to make their own procedures secure."

"F-Secure’s Anti-Virus product will provide our customers with excellent protection, giving them peace of mind when using the Internet and banking online, without annoying them with pop-ups and confusing instructions. The software and service met all our requirements — it’s straightforward to set up, provides thorough protection that’s updated daily and is backed up with an excellent support," concluded Law.

The agreement with F-Secure allows Barclays to offer a free service to its online customers that would normally cost more than $80 for the two years. "This offer places Barclays in a different league to its competitors when it comes to keeping customers safe online," commented Siilasmaa. "By protecting them online, Barclays is ensuring that, whether on bank business or not, its customers are given the best possible service."

Barclays Bank customers using F-Secure Anti-Virus will also have the option to upgrade to F-Secure’s flagship Internet Security product for a reduced price, giving them additional features including parental control, a personal firewall, spam filters and application control.

PARIS (AFP) — French researchers said an epidemic of the disease known as chikungunya, which ravaged the Indian Ocean island of Reunion, was spurred by a mutated form of a mosquito-borne virus.

The chikungunya virus is typically spread by the yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti).

But sequencing of a gene, E1, which allows the virus to attach to mosquito cellular membranes, suggests the pathogen may also be carried by another species, the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), they report in the journal PLoS Medicine.

The Pasteur Institute team analysed samples of the virus taken from 121 patients in Reunion, Madagascar, Seychelles, Mayotte and Mauritius.

The outbreak of chikungunya began in Reunion in early 2005 but dramatically accelerated in December, leaving health workers mystified as to how this happened.

Eventually, around 258,000 people — a third of the island’s population of 777,000 — fell sick with the disease, which also …

LONDON (AFP) — British scientists are developing a single test that could spot more than 600 deadly viruses, including bird flu, rabies and foot and mouth disease, within hours, the government announced.

It is hoped the so-called “Lab on a Chip” — laboratory on a microchip — will be able to detect diseases in up to 36 hours, much faster than current methods of confirming viruses, which can take as long as seven to 10 days.

The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) is pumping 1.5 million pounds (2.2 million euros, 2.8 million dollars) into the project as a key line of defence against possible future health scares.

“Identifying the cause of a disease outbreak is vital if we’re to put the right actions in place,” said DEFRA’s chief scientific adviser, Professor Howard Dalton.

The test works by placing DNA extracts …
