The number of virus-laden e-mails dropped for the third consecutive month from 2.01% in August, to 1.75% in September, the lowest level in 2005, according to e-mail security company, BlackSpider Technologies.
BlackSpider said in September it blocked over 2.8m infected e-mails and the most popular virus in the month remained Netsky.P, which accounted for 24% of all viruses detected in the month. According to the company, the most common malware sent in September were, in order: W32.Netsky.P, W32.Mytob.DF, W32.Netsky.D, W32.Mytob.ED, Phish-BankFraud.eml.a, W32.Mytob.AG, W32.Mydoom.BU, W32/Bagle!eml.gen, W32.Mytob.EE, and W32.Mytob.C.
Zero-day malware, that is malware sent before a patch is released, have almost doubled since August 2005, the company claims. The top zero-day viruses by threat in September were: Downloader-AAP!eml Trojan, Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Agent.uf, Email-Worm.Win32.Bagle.dg, Email-Worm.Win32.Bagle.ct, Email-Worm.Win32.Bagle.cs, Email-Worm.Win32.Bagle.de, Email-Worm.Win32.Bagle.da, Email-Worm.Win32.Bagle.df, Trojan-PSW.Win32.PdPinch.ae, Email-Worm.Win32.Bagle.db, Trojan-Dropper.VBS.Small.l, Email-Worm.Win32.Bagle.dt, Email-Worm.Win32.Bagle.dp, Email-Worm.Win32.Bagle.cu, Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Small.bow, and W32.Pexmor@mm.
Furthermore, spam accounted for 78% of all e-mail received in the UK, a slight decrease compared to 79% in August. There was an increase in travel-related spam, up 58% on August’s figure, and shopping-related spam has increased 11% over the same period, the company claims.
