April 27, 2005

Utahns can take measures to help prevent the spread of West Nile virus. The Utah Department of Health advises the following:

— Turn over or remove containers in yards where water collects.

— Clean out birdbaths and wading pools at least once a week.

— Clear out clogged rain gutters and downspouts.

— Repair torn door and window screens.

— Wear repellents with DEET between the hours of dusk and dawn.

— Wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts when outdoors in the evening and early morning hours.

Web antivirus

April 1, 2005

eNet organizers must provide access to the Internet, but must also ensure the network is protected from spyware, malicious code, viruses and other Web-based threats. Virus scanning at the Internet access point of eNet plays a critical role in network security by removing harmful content at the security perimeter.

Blue Coat Systems’ ProxyAV, combined with the ProxySG, will provide scalability for virus scanning, plus complete visibility and control of enterprise Web communications. These appliances will handle the real-time requirements of Web protocols and applications, and will complement firewalls and existing antivirus products as part of the overall N+I security architecture. Optimized for content- and object-level processing, the Blue Coat solution inspects Web traffic and handles Web content according to policies set by the N+I network administrators.

The appliances include the option to run virus-scanning engines from McAfee, Sophos and Panda natively on ProxyAV, or integrate Symantec and other ICAP-certified virus-scanning solutions with the ProxySG. The ProxyAV for eNet is utilizing the McAfee AV scanning engine.

eNet administrators can choose to have data deemed safe, like documents from trusted sources, and not vectored to the ProxyAV for scanning. Other data requested from internal sites can be sent to the service for light scanning, while all other content from unknown external sources outside the eNet boundaries will be sent to the ProxyAV scanning service for deeper inspection.

The ProxyAV enables eNet administrators to scan for viruses, worms, spyware and trojans entering through Web-based backdoors.

Viruses targeting mobile devices are growing more sophisticated, but at the same time antivirus providers are coming up with new products to stay a step ahead.

There is little doubt mobile viruses are on an evolutionary fast track, with growing evidence over the past few months that they are mutating from simple "proof-of-concept" experiments into legitimate threats that challenge users and network operators.

In response, antivirus providers are literally mobilizing to answer that upgraded threat. It’s an ounce of prevention strategy - the idea is to use past experience …
